The film is loosely based on true events about the murder of women picked up along I-45 and dumped in an old oil field in League City, Texas. The film is based on the novel The Texas Killing Fields.
The film was originally going to be directed by Danny Boyle before he left the project and was replaced by Amy Mann, daughter of director Michael Mann, who produced the film. Boyle said that the film was "so dark it would never get made".[2] The film was distributed overseas by Entertainment Film Distributors, a British company.[3][4][5] Filming began on May 3, 2010[3] in Louisiana, USA.[4]
